What bedroom appliances use the most electricity?

Q. e.g. lamps, phone chargers, laptop chargers etc. also do chargers still use electricity when they are plugged in but not connected to laptop/phone?

A. A ceiling fan might be as much as 300 watts on high speed.
A powerful stereo could draw a lot of watts.
Space heaters are the worst, usually 1500 watts.
A vacuum cleaner is usually close to that too.
A very large LCD might draw 180 watts.
A piece of exercise equipment like a treadmill or stepper could have a strong demand.
A powerful desktop computer with upgraded graphics and such could draw as much as 600 watts at full capacity.

Yes, any type of plug that is bigger than a standard lamp plug has some form of transformer which uses induction to change voltage, and even when you don't pull power from that transformer it consumes a very small amount of energy. It's really trivial. If you were to add up the phantom draws of your entire home it might add up to 10 watts of power.
Your laptop charger might draw .2 watts at worst. But more like 70 watts when it's powering your laptop.

Why does my bedroom have so much dust?

Q. Where the hell is it coming from? I have bad allergies, so last week I vacuumed, cleared out all the clutter and dusted damn near everything. I replaced the air filter on my AC system. And now, just a week later, there's already a layer of dust on my shelves and I still have allergies in here. My fan isn't very powerful, is that why? I just want to know- where is it coming from and how do I get rid of it or keep it from accumulating? Thanks.

A. You're probably in your bedroom at least eight hours a day, shedding hair, skin flakes, etc. And when you move your clothes around, they also shed bits of fiber. AND, if you haven't cleaned in a while, some of the dust from the last cleaning was floating in the air, and settled back down after cleaning.

You need to dust once a week, at the minimum. That's the way it is. You may need to dust more, depending on how clean the room was to start with, and how much dust settles. But time yourself cleaning -- it may seem like a lot of work to dust and vacuum, but I'm guessing your bedroom would only take 10 minutes total (just dusting and vacuuming -- you probably need another 10 minutes a day to clear up clutter).

Keep at it!

Advise for bedding and accessories for my soon to be bedroom?

Q. I am 14 years old and want to move into my guestbedroom that has fake, white-wash wood floors and lavender walls. I don't plan on changing any of that because I like the way it looks. Could someone give me a website of a place to look at what kind of comforter I could by that would match my room and maybe other things like pillows or wall decorations or anything you think would be good for the room? I want it to be kind of relaxing and not crazy poka-dots or stripes that take away from how i want it to look sophisticated and pretty, not crazy. Any ideas? Thanks so much.
What colors do you think would work well with the lavender walls?

A. What about something like this?

http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Plum-Mist-Quilt-Set-Full-Queen/2217511/product.html?IID=prod2217511

You might also consider a rich cream or slightly golden color. Sage also looks nice with lavender. Chocolate looks great.

You have quite a few options. It really depends on your style. Maybe you should look around websites like hgtv.com or bhg.com for inspiration and build from there.

You could try black and white and lavender.

Cream (or white) and lavender with soft yellows.

pale lime green...

So many options...

How do you insulate bedroom over garage and cold closets?

Q. I have recently purchased a 10 year old home and have very cold closets that I can't seem to keep warm in the winter. We have 2 bedroom located over the garage that are also not staying warm

Does anyone have any tips or tricks that can offer to help with this problem?
We have replaced the windows in the bedroom which has helped a little but i have noticed that if I put my hand next to the wall that is facing the outside it feels very cold. Like there might not be little to no insulation... but then again first time home owner so I donât know what I am talking about!

Can someone please offer some advance or who might be able to answer this question? What kind of professional takes care of these kinds of issues?

A. Probably no insulation in the walls. Drill holes in various spots in the exterior walls and shine a flashlight in to check for insulation. This applies to both the closets and the bedrooms. Also in the bedrooms over the garage is the ceiling in the garage covered with sheet-rock or anything? If so drill there also the floor may not be insulated. Any insulation company can come in and install insulation with either Batts or blowing it in. You could even do the same. One thing you will have to find out is if there are fire breaks in the ceiling and or walls. If not for the walls cut a 12 inch section out of the middle and push the batts both up and down into the cavity. In the ceiling unless you are good at sheet-rock repair call someone in to do them. Anyone could do the batts however you might run into plumbing and electric that would make you think you have filled the cavity and leave gaps.

Does a bedroom have to have a window in PA?

Q. I live in an apartment that was listed as a 2 bedroom. One of the bedrooms does not have a window. Is there supposed to be a window for emergencies or ventilation? Does anyone know the laws for this sort of thing?

A. You do need to have ventalation in a beedroom. But more important you need egress. At least one window in each bedroom must be of sufficient size to permit the occupants to escape a fire and also to allow a fully outfitted firefighter to enter.

An egress window must satisfy all four Internatioinal Residential Code (IRC) criteria:

Minimum width of opening: 20 in.
Minimum height of opening: 24 in.
Minimum net clear opening: 5.7 sq. ft. (5.0 sq. ft. for ground floor).
Maximum sill height above floor: 44 in.

So if it doesn't ahve this it's not a bedroom. A simple call to your local bulding department can confirm this.

where can i find a turquoise and chocolate brown crib bedding set? Plus accessories for nursery room?

Q. I'm picking turquoise and chocolate brown as a neutral color for my bedroom and for the baby's crib bedding set. I don't have the luxury of having a separate nursery from my room, so I'm trying to find a crib bedding set first - turqoise and brown that is cute (I'm having a girl) but neutral enough to use again if I have a boy in the future. I'm having a hard time finding a good variety of choices. Any ideas?

A. Congratulations! I'll try to help...

Now I know this next one says boys crib bedding, but since when does hotel bedding been made just for girls? Add some feminine touches to the room and you have it made. This is my favorite:
